Wistman's Wood

Wistman's Wood is an ancient remote high altitude oak wood on Dartmoor in Devon. It is probably a remnant of ancient forests that covered the area in the distant past. Wistman’s Wood covers approximately 3.5 hectares and is sited on a sheltered south-west facing valley slope.

Despite the age of the site, the oak trees are small and stunted and twisted into contorted shapes creating interesting patterns as you look through the grove. Long beards of lichen hang from the branches and everything is covered in a thick carpet of luxuriant moss, very reminiscent of a Japanese moss garden. Click on the tiles to start a slide show.
